Explore the ancient art of belly dance in this three-part series of 75-minute sessions. Each class will begin with centering breath work and an invigorating yoga warm-up targeting core, arm, and spine strengthening , as well as hip and heart opening movement. An introduction to the isolations and foundational movements of belly dance will follow, building to integrated dance sequencing and interactive improvisational dance.
No experience necessary. Progressing through the series will review and build upon movement studied. Drop-ins are welcome ($20) as space is available. Priority given to students enrolled in the full series.
What to wear?
Students are encouraged to wear comfortable, breathable clothing that they can move in both on the yoga mat and on their feet. Dressing in clothing appropriate for yoga style movement is ideal. Students are more than welcome to also add on hip shawls or other accessories to inspire and embellish dance movement, but nothing additional is required.
About the instructor:
Jana studied and performed belly dance for 15+ years in Northern California and Portland, Oregon. Her Master of Arts graduate thesis examined feminist and cultural trends in literature depicting this ancient women’s movement art. Jana studied with living legends of the tribal belly dance community in the CA Bay Area in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. She has instructed classes, organized dance troupes, choreographed performances and ran her own movement studio in NE Portland in 2006/7. In 2010, Jana took a deep plunge into another of her life-long movement passions, earning certification as a 200hr Registered Yoga Teacher. Since then, Jana has instructed hatha, prenatal, power, vinyasa, restorative, and yin yoga in a variety of settings. Jana currently teaches weekly classes at Thrive Yoga & Wellness in Oregon City and is excited to share her love of belly dance in this 3-part series.
