Conquering Chaturanga with Kimi Marin

Conquering the Challenging Chaturanga:  101 Basics of How-To Do this Pose Correctly

Chaturanga Dandasana translates to “four-limbed staff pose” and is also known as “low plank.” In yoga classes chaturanga dandasana is often cued as “take a vinyasa” or “high to low plank.”  Despite how often chaturanga is done in a class, rarely do teachers spend a lot of time going over how to do this difficult posture correctly. As a result, many people spend years struggling through the posture. Poor form in chaturanga translates to extra stress, and possible injury, to wrists, elbows, and shoulders.  Poor form in chaturanga also translates to poor form in most arm balances and inversions. With proper alignment, chaturanga helps to strengthen the arms, legs, and shoulders; tone the abdominals; and prepares you for arm balances, inversions and backbends.

Many people think a good chaturanga means upper body strength – this is a misperception. Chaturanga dandasana is doable for anybody but proper alignment is a must. In this workshop, we will work to identify and strengthen the muscles involved in chaturanga and find alignment in your body. As we learn proper alignment of this challenging pose, we will also learn how to transition from Chaturanga to cobra and upward facing dog to Downward facing dog – allowing you to find ease, grace, and an overall increase in body awareness as you “take a vinyasa.”

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra

Beginning in November 2018 - First Friday Night of every Month. A proven antidote to anxiety, Yoga Nidra has been adopted by veterans, recovering addicts and the average stressed-out people. Although Yoga Nidra can help with stress reduction and a better nights sleep, it also helps promote a better sense of well-being. It is not actually ‘sleep’ yoga at all. Unlike other forms of meditation, in which you focus on mantra or on your breath, Yoga Nidra asks you simply to let go. It encourages you to engage in the process of surrender. Yoga Nidra is a systematic form of guided relaxation that allows the body to restore our senses and reset the mind to their natural function. A typical class starts by setting an intention for your life and for your practice. Then you learn to focus your awareness on your breath, bodily sensations, emotions and thoughts. Throughout the practice, you are encouraged to tap into an underlying sense of peace that is always present and to cultivate “witness consciousness,” observing and welcoming whatever is present “without getting caught up in it.”

You don’t have to do yoga or meditate to do Yoga Nidra. It’s an appealing practice to people who might feel intimidated by yoga postures or traditional seated meditation. You will be lying on the floor for the majority of the class so please come prepared with your own comfy pillow (we do have bolsters), a blanket (the studio does have a some available), and any additional props you feel you may need. USE THE RESTROOM PRIOR TO CLASS BEGINNING. This is very important as it is VERY distracting during the practice if suddenly you need to rush to the restroom. Thank you and look forward to sharing this practice with you.

Winter Solstice Meditation with Hamsa Meditation Center

Each year during the Winter Solstice, nature pauses in the stillness and darkness of winter and beckons us to do the same. It's almost as if she's conspiring to help us go deep into our own place of silence so we can reflect, meditate, and plant the seeds that will bring our hopes and aspirations into manifestation during the coming year.

This is, for many of you, the favorite meditation of the year! This year is extra special because we will be in our new location, our new home.

Integrate: A Yoga Workshop Series

Integrate: A Yoga Workshop Series

Join Thrive instructor Sage in this three part workshop all about integrating yoga into your daily life. Each day focuses on a different aspect that yoga can be used as a tool for.

Part one, Friday (10/19) 6-9pm -- Yoga as a tool for spiritual growth and wholeness. Whether you follow one or more spiritual paths, this workshop will focus on the devotion to ourselves. Maybe that means stepping away from the concept of identity, or even giving in to the unknown by allowing yourself to pause and exist here and now. Maybe that means aligning yourself with your own values, or the values of a god or gods, or even the values of the universe. This workshop will provide tools of meditation and yoga poses to find that spiritual wholeness.
Part two, Saturday (10/20) 3-6pm -- Yoga as a tool for emotion healing and building resilience. Sage's training has been specific to trauma-informed teaching. They provide a safe space, emotionally and physically for your practice. This workshop will go into concepts of overcoming anxiety and depression with yoga (as one tool), steadying yourself in a consistently traumatizing culture, and strengthen your will and resilience for personal and emotional growth.
Part three, Sunday (10/21) 3-6pm -- Yoga as a tool for physical recovery and stability. Whether you are working with an injury, minor or severe, this workshop is about finding the right yoga poses and techniques for YOUR body. Every body is unique and moves in its own way, and this workshop will focus on that body awareness, working around injuries, creating stability and recovering from injury.

Scholarships are available for this workshop! Thrive Yoga & Wellness provides an all-inclusive, whole-hearted approach to community. Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance to attend.

$130 for full series
