Conquering the Challenging Chaturanga: 101 Basics of How-To Do this Pose Correctly
Chaturanga Dandasana translates to “four-limbed staff pose” and is also known as “low plank.” In yoga classes chaturanga dandasana is often cued as “take a vinyasa” or “high to low plank.” Despite how often chaturanga is done in a class, rarely do teachers spend a lot of time going over how to do this difficult posture correctly. As a result, many people spend years struggling through the posture. Poor form in chaturanga translates to extra stress, and possible injury, to wrists, elbows, and shoulders. Poor form in chaturanga also translates to poor form in most arm balances and inversions. With proper alignment, chaturanga helps to strengthen the arms, legs, and shoulders; tone the abdominals; and prepares you for arm balances, inversions and backbends.
Many people think a good chaturanga means upper body strength – this is a misperception. Chaturanga dandasana is doable for anybody but proper alignment is a must. In this workshop, we will work to identify and strengthen the muscles involved in chaturanga and find alignment in your body. As we learn proper alignment of this challenging pose, we will also learn how to transition from Chaturanga to cobra and upward facing dog to Downward facing dog – allowing you to find ease, grace, and an overall increase in body awareness as you “take a vinyasa.”
